A Week Of Racing

Posted by: Mark on March 28th, 2012 in Events, Racing with no comments

We’re just back from nearly a week at the Redlands Classic, where Mark played soigneur, DS, team car driver,  AND mechanic for the Champion System p/b Stan’s No Tubes team. The boys were able to test their legs against some of the best in the country, and overall the trip was a big success. We’re very excited for the upcoming season! (And the new kits look sharp.)

Meanwhile, back on the East Coast, everyone was talking about the Red Hook Crit – the nighttime, fixed gear, brakeless crit in Brooklyn. Dan Chabanov took the top spot on the podium again, and Kacey Manderfield was first woman. Congrats to the winners, to all who finished (28 out of 100!), and to Dave Trimble for putting on such a unique, “only in NYC” event.

You can catch up with all the happenings around the race on the very cool official Red Hook Crit photo blog.

Redlands or Bust

We’re packing our bags and heading off to the Redlands Cycling Classic for 5 days of racing this week. Mark will be the mechanic/soigneur for Champion Systems p/b Stan’s No Tubes. Ifixbyx is very excited to be participating in this mainstay of US racing. The race has been around since 1985, and seen the likes of Davis Phinney, Scott Moninger, AlisonDunlap, Chris Horner and, even Cadel Evans(!) on the podium. There are so many legends (both male and female) to have participated in this race – check out full results from over the years.

While Mark is out West, Dave and our friend Chris will be holding down the day-to-day in the studio. Please give a call at (646) 201-9219 or email info@ifixbyx.com or david@ifixbyx.com with any questions or help you may need.

If you’d like to stop by to demo a set of Stan’s No Tubes wheels this week, we have some available. We’ve already had a great response to the program and want everyone to experience the benefits of riding tubeless tires and wheels. Check out last week’s post for more information or call/email us.

The weather has been great this past week and lots of folks have been out riding and (finally!) racing. We saw our good friend Jed Kornbluh as he passed through NYC as part of Tim Johnson’s Ride on Washington (Check out #TJROW on twitter) . They arrived in DC yesterday, having left Boston on Friday, to attend the National Bike Summit.

Congrats are also due to Beth Renner of our sister team - Innervations Fitness/Stan’s No Tubes.  Beth won the CRCA women’s field on Saturday. Watch for more great things from these women this year.

Demo Days

Posted by: Mark on March 14th, 2012 in News with no comments

At the end of last year, we hinted at a new wheel demo program coming from our friends at Stan’s No Tubes. Now, we are pleased to announce that the deal is sealed (pun intended).

It works like this: You’re thinking of going tubeless (everyone’s doing it) but you don’t know where to start. Simple – just bring in your current wheels, and we’ll let you use a pair of Stan’s for up to a week! We are convinced you’ll love the experience.

All the demo info is here on Stan’s site.

And head on over to their main site for tons of tubeless tech, including some great videos on conversion and installation.

Seeing Red (2012)

Posted by: Mark on March 6th, 2012 in News, Racing with no comments

This week, we were fortunate to have SRAM stop by for a full run-through of the highly anticipated Red 2012 groupset. SRAM’s Sandy Chapman showed up to the studio on Tuesday with an ominous looking black suitcase with a huge ‘Red’ sticker on the side and took us deep into SRAM tech land.

During the hands-on preview, we quickly realized that SRAM has managed to improve every aspect of the group; from the amazing Yaw front derailleur technology, to the improved hood shape, to the all-new front chainring design, we were very impressed with the entire package. More pics here on our flickr gallery.

In other news – this past weekend saw the official start of the NYC road racing season. A wet and chilly Saturday morning greeted the CRCA racers in Central Park, and we are happy to report that Champion System p/b Stan’s No Tubes racer Allan Rego took first place in the Men’s A field, just edging out our suitemate Chad Butts of enduranceWERX – after the 2 rode off the front for nearly the entire race. Chapeau Allan!

Full results on the day found here on the CRCA site.

Absolu-tely!

Posted by: Mark on February 29th, 2012 in Bikes, News with no comments

We were pretty excited when we were asked by our friends at Cyfac to build up a custom Absolu V2 for the upcoming North American Handmade Bicycle Show. But we were even more excited when we learned that this bike would have Campy EPS on it(!!)

For those of you not up on current events, this would not only be our first real EPS build, it would make our show bike one of the FIRST IN THE US to be built up with Campy’s revolutionary new electronic group. We always say a picture is worth a thousand words, so rather than ramble on at length about how cool the features of the group are, we’ll let our camera do the talking.  The full gallery is here on our flickr page.

Thanks Cyfac and Joseph for this unique opportunity! And if you have any questions about EPS, give us a ring – we have lots to tell.

Going Back To Cali

Posted by: Mark on February 15th, 2012 in News with no comments

It was cold in NYC the past weekend, so we welcome getting on a plane to support the participants in the enduranceWERX San Diego training camp this week. But fear not – David Sommerville will remain at the studio and continue to support those of you with your own “training camp” in New York City.  You can reach David by calling (646) 201-9219 or email him at david@ifixbyx.com

As we divide and conquer, you can keep up-to-date with our going on’s via our Twitter and Instagram accounts (both are @ifixbyx). We’ll be sure to post plenty of pics to keep you envious informed.

Of course, if you’re in search of something less digital and a bit more analog, you can swing by the local newsstand to grab a copy of Peloton 10. We’re really proud that Peloton included us in their “Birth of the New” feature in the current issue (and even more so because of the awesome cover with Lemond). If you’re out and about, be sure and grab a copy to see what we’ve been up to.

Post-Bowl

Posted by: Mark on February 8th, 2012 in News with no comments

After a thrilling Super Bowl Sunday – in which it was once again proven that New England sucks – we find ourselves realizing that winter (what we’ve had of one) is actually winding down, and we start turning our attention towards a new season.

What this means in the studio:  new bike builds are starting to trickle in. Folks who have recovered from the bills of the holidays are now scouring the internet picking out frames and components – proving that the optimal number of bikes is always n+1, n being the number of bikes you currently own.

We also appreciate this time of the year for the anticipation it brings: new teams are being formed, racers are being traded, and everyone is starting to get fit (or at least starting to talk about it seriously – you know who you are). One thing we are really looking forward to is the new SRAM Red group. Almost everything about this group is a game-changer in the world of cabled systems (yes, we are doing so many Di2 installs even we are surprised). But from the new “Yaw Technology” on the front derailleur, to the integrated Quarq cranks, to the elastomers between the cogs on the cassette, there isn’t a single thing here that hasn’t made us say “Wow”.  We’ll be talking a lot more about Red in the near future, but if you’re on the fence deciding on a top-level group, give us a call and we’ll talk you through the feature set.

Next week we’ll get to fast-forward to early summer as we join EnduranceWerx on their San Diego training camp. We’ll be providing race-level support for the duration of the camp, and we have to say we can think of worse gigs to take in February. If you’re participating in the camp – we’ll see you next week, otherwise stay tuned for some updates. (February 17-20)

And speaking of training, we are getting excited for our sponsorship of the new Champion System p/b Stan’s No Tubes to hit the road, literally. Check out their new site for news and results throughout the season. We have it on good authority they’re going to have some tricks up their sleeve in the world of social media.

That’s A Wrap

Posted by: Mark on January 30th, 2012 in Events, News with no comments

We’re used to working in any and all circumstances. Whether we’re providing support at a race or training camp or giving a customer a hands-on tutorial about a problem with their bike here in the studio, we pride ourselves on our adaptability above and beyond your typical bike shop.

But last Thursday we experienced something completely new – a real, live film crew! That’s right – Ifixbyx was selected by software company Acclivity to be featured as a small business in an upcoming advertisement. As big fans and daily users of their Checkout software, we were both honored and enthusiastic to be part of the project. It was especially cool to see how a commercial gets made, and even cooler that our studio was the big star of the show! Dollies, cameras and lights rolled in around 8am. After some still photography and an interview, the crew shot some b-roll (that’s industry-talk for “filler”), and around 1pm we heard “That’s a wrap!”

We can’t wait to see the finished product. In the meantime, if you’re a small business and in need of a point-of-sale solution, be sure and checkout Checkout!

Training Day(s)

Posted by: Mark on January 23rd, 2012 in News, Tips with no comments

OK, now that winter decided to join us, the inevitable indoor training sessions (at home, or at the enduranceWERX studio) are becoming a reality.

Unfortunately, we’ve seen far too many good tires go the way of the trash bin due to these intense hours on the trainer. That’s why we’d like to take the time to point out the importance of using a trainer tire. The robust compound won’t succumb to failure (see the all-too-common example in the photo above – where the tread starts to delaminate from the tire itself) or wear out prematurely.

We sell a snazzy blue number by TACX that’s a fair bit cheaper than a standard road tire. Stop by or give us a call and we’ll tell you more about it.
